Artist’s Statement

My medium could be called collage or mixed media, but I prefer to think of it as “painting with paper.” I use the paper as I would paint. . . putting down color-by-color, layering it and changing textures and edges as I rip, tear, or cut the papers I have found.  The papers are gathered from all over the world- Nepal, Japan, Egypt, Mexico, India, Tibet and Thailand.  I use colored pencils and chalk pastels over the paper.

The ideas and images for my artwork come to me everywhere I go.  I use my camera to capture these images, and I let my photographs guide me as I begin each collage.  Although I begin with a composition in mind, I usually end up letting the papers, the textures, and the colors guide me as the work evolves.

I try to keep spontaneity in my work.  The pastels react with the different paper textures in unpredictable ways as I rub and draw them on the papers.  I use fabric for the clothes on the lines and colored pencil when I want more control.

The visual effects are distinctive for this art form.  Each work is one of a kind.
