Emily Piccirillo studied at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and New York University, and she is a recipient of the Franz and Virginia Bader award. Emily paints photo-realistic skyscapes on canvas panels tied within steel grids that stand off the wall. This contrast of materials and their three-dimensional effect give the work a distinctive sculptural quality.
The reverse side of the art is also painted with vivid tones that reflect back around the pieces and in the spaces among the panels. Each work becomes a dialogue between actual light and the depiction of light on the canvas. Also, the panels cast shadows, converging field with ground and enhancing the illusionism. At times the paintings appear to float in space, like the clouds depicted drifting across them.
Just as her work incorporates the fabricated and natural worlds, the vertical and the horizontal, Emily Piccirillo considers herself a hybrid. She grew up in a rural setting and then moved to the city, and her work expresses this dynamic of experiences. The images can be appreciated for their aesthetics, for the implied freedom and peace, the suggestion of endless expanse. They also present a simple invitation to pause and breathe.
