Artist Statement/Bio
I began my ceramic journey early on. It has unfolded as a lifelong pursuit and ever-growing appreciation for the medium. Born and raised in Manhattan, I have had the opportunity to work in and learn from a community of outstanding artisans. After learning to work on the wheel, I then found my voice as a hand builder. At Greenwich House Pottery, I spent forty plus years developing my style and techniques. I have studied at and been a member of the following studios: Greenwich House, Parsons School of Design, Earthworks, Mud Clay Studio, Choplet and am presently working at Williamsburg Ceramic Center.
I incorporate pinch pot, slab, and coiling techniques to build my work. My intention is to push the boundaries of clay to create layered and textured, multi-dimensional surfaces. My work has developed into a variety of interrelated bodies influenced by the unique shapes in nature that move me.
My tree sculptures are meant to convey the aura of the female form. The boundless curves and angles that appear as the body moves, are realized in the trunk, twisting branches and blooms, majestically standing tall or gracefully bent over.
