Marcie Wolf Hubbard’s fascination with drawing the figure’s grace in charcoal forms the foundation for her mixed media encaustic paintings. She embeds her drawings in hot wax then adds layers of transparent or opaque color along with other materials such as maps, postcards or handmade paper. Marcie augments her energetic application of the brush-painted wax by drawing and carving with a tool as well as applying oil stick pigments (oil paint in solid form.) She fuses each layer of wax or painting in wax to the preceding layer. Marcie marries additive collage imagery with encaustic’s mysterious depth and transparency to achieve the effect of an image floating on vellum. She further lends an earthy note to her delicate paintings by using natural wood support and textural elements.
