When Dr. Katharine K. Owens began a career transition from Counseling Psychologist to visual artist, she thought she was moving from one world into another, leaving psychology far behind her. She soon discovered many medical professionals working as visual artists, recognizing that work with patients is as much an art as science and artistic talent can be expressed through paint and color as well as medicine when the time is right.
Now fully retired and immersed in an 18-year art career, Katharine is joyously creating in her studio every day. She began her art career by creating 3-dimensional paper constructions, mostly depicting doors, windows and buildings, framed in shadow boxes. Recently she has moved into impressionistic, abstract painting, using acrylic paint on wrapped museum quality canvas.
Katharine has exhibited her work at Montpelier Arts Center, Laurel, MD, Circle Gallery, Annapolis, MD, Baltimore-Washington Airport, Anne Arundel County Executive Building, Annapolis, MD ,Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton, VA, Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts, Fredericksburg, VA, Back Door Gallery, Fredericksburg, VA, Uptown Gallery, Richmond, VA, Cezanne Jewelry, Annapolis, MD. Additionally, she has exhibited at Space Coast, West Palm Beach, FL, Savannah, GA, Charlottesville, VA, Rockville, MD and others.
For over 10 years Katharine has been represented by Zenith Gallery, District of Columbia. She is an active member of Fredericksburg Creative Council for the Arts, Maryland Federation of the Art and is one of two artists conducting artist critiques at FCCA.
