WASHINGTON, DC – February 4, 2011 – Sculpture, art chairs and abstract painting are the highlight of this exhibition of work by architect turned painter/sculptor Joel D'Orazio.  New as a Zenith Gallery artist, D’Orazio will be featured in a solo show, Listen to Me, at the Gallery at 1111 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, curated by Zenith Gallery.  The show will open on February 7 and remain on display through May 13, with a “Meet the Artist” Reception on Wednesday, March 2, from 5:30pm to 8:00pm.

An artist whose creative energies seem boundless, D’Orazio uses found objects and industrial materials to create artworks that have been shown in galleries throughout the mid-Atlantic region, Ohio and Arkansas; in the Arts in the Embassies program; at the American Institute of Architects, OAS, the International Monetary Fund and many other venues.  His work is also held in individual and corporate collections.

In his paintings, D’Orazio uses polyurethane on hollow door panels, and for his chair sculptures, he wraps colored industrial cable around found or donated chairs to synthesize a common everyday human element into a visual statement where function is beside the point.  D’Orazio also creates orb-like sculptures, transforming found parts and detritus into a myriad of interesting forms.

Prior to becoming a full-time working artist, D’Orazio enjoyed a successful career as an architect for 25 years, with his practice spanning residential, corporate and industrial designs.
